The most used lenses in photography are the wide angle zoom 24mm-70mm, the telephoto 70mm-200mm, and the prime lens 50mm. Both Nikon and Canon brands will produce the best glass that provides the best quality image for your pictures. You can use other brands like Sigma and Tamron and also get great quality images if you are on a budget. I will share with you the 3 Lenses I use and keep with me at every event I do.
50mm f/1.8 Prime Lens
Let’s talk about the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G lens. This is a Prime lens. A prime lens has a fixed focal length meaning you cannot zoom in and out. This lens is loved by everyone in photography. This lens goes to a f/1.8 which most zoom lenses do not get under f/2.8. The closer the lens is to the subject, the softer the foreground/background will become. These lenses can be most desirable because of the fast aperture.
24-70mm f/2.8 Wide Angle Lens
This is my favorite photography lens. The Nikon AF-S FX Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED lens is the most versatile lens Nikon produces and allows you to capture just about anything. Wedding photographers especially love this lens because it captures all the precious moments without lapsing to change gear. I use this lens 85% of the time! The 24mm allows you to have a nice wide open shot while the 70mm lets you get in a bit tighter to get the exact shot you want. This is a fun lens to have in your bag and for documentary photography, this might be the only lens you need.
70-200mm f/2.8 Telephoto Lens
I call this lens “The Money Shot” lens because When I am far from the subject I am shooting and it is an important moment, this lens has my back ! This is the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens and it is a BEAST. I do many events and I carry 2 camera bodies. One body has the 24-70mm lens and the other body has this. The focal length allows you to give your subject space to move without you have to be right in their face, while still giving you the scope for tight shots. It also allows you to be creative in new ways, giving you options to focus on small details within a composition or landscape, all the wile not needing to move your feet.
These are the most used photography lenses professionals use. This article is for Canon lenses too. With all 3 of these lenses you can get so many different unique great shots for all types of events and shoots. The Tamron and Sigma lenses can be great alternatives if you want something more budget friendly. Go out, practice, and learn new ways you can use these lenses to their best ability.
